First, know what you’re measuring
Followers tell you who could see your posts. Engagement tells you who cared. Here is the formula worth tracking every week:
Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ reach × 100
As a rough guide, 1–3% is average for most brands. Push past that and you’re ahead. But not every action counts the same:

Move 1
Win the first 3 seconds
People decide to stay or scroll almost instantly. Your first line, first slide, or first frame is your headline. Put the payoff up front.

A simple structure for any short video. For carousels, slide 1 is the hook and the last slide is the ask.
Hook formulas that work
- “Stop doing X if you want Y.”
- “We tested X for 30 days. Here’s what happened.”
- “3 mistakes that quietly kill your reach.”
Move 2
Make it worth saving or sending
Likes are cheap. Saves and shares happen when a post is useful enough to keep or pass on. Before you publish, ask one question: would someone send this to a colleague?
- Checklists and step-by-step guides
- Templates people can copy today
- Before and after examples with real results
- Myths busted in your industry
Move 3
Match the format to the goal

Move 4
End with one clear question
“Thoughts?” gets silence. A specific, easy question gets replies. Ask for one word, one number, or one choice.
Weak: “Let us know what you think!”
Strong: “Which is your weak spot: hooks or captions? Comment 1 or 2.”
Move 5
Reply fast, and reply with substance
The first hour after posting matters most. Stay online and answer every comment.
- Reply with a follow-up question, not just “Thanks!”
- Pin the best comment to spark more discussion.
- Turn common questions into your next post.
Move 6
Show up consistently, and engage first
Three or four steady posts a week beat ten posts followed by silence. Batch your content on one day so it never depends on your mood. Then spend 10 minutes before and after each post leaving thoughtful comments on accounts your audience follows.

Move 7
Review weekly and double down
Every Friday, find your top three posts. Note the hook, the format, and the topic. Then make two more like each one. This is how small accounts grow: repeat what already works.

Post, reply, review, improve, and repeat every week.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying followers or joining engagement pods. Fake engagement hurts your reach and your credibility.
- Posting and disappearing. Comments left unanswered are wasted momentum.
- Hashtag stuffing. Use 3–5 relevant ones.
- Selling in every post. Aim for about 80% helpful, 20% promotional.
- Ignoring your analytics. If you don’t check, you can’t improve.
Your 5-minute checklist
- Does the first line make someone stop scrolling?
- Is it useful enough to save or send?
- Is the format right for my goal?
- Does it end with one easy question?
- Can I reply to every comment in the first hour?
